How I Got Myself Kicked Off of Chowhound...
...by upholding my sense of honor, my dignity, and my self-respect Chubbypanda-style.
Chowhound is a San Francisco-based discussion board that was purportedly created to allow food lovers from around the world to share their favorite "locals only" spots with others. While the goal of their organization is laudable, draconian and often capricious decisions on the part of their moderators have effectively turned a project with much promise into a combination hype-machine and echo-chamber. The Chowhound Team's insistence on weeding out "insiderish" posts has directly worked against their aim of bringing lesser-known eateries into the public eye. If fondness for, and familiarity with, a restaurant marks you as an "insider" with an "agenda", how are locals to share their favorite secret spots with others?
They can't. Here lies Chowhound's Achilles Heel. As a result, you'll see ten posts in a week on much-hyped celebrity restaurants like Cube, Bluefin, Mozza, and Jar, but few unique hole-in-the-wall or mom & pop recommendations for the "Chowhounds" who "blaze trails", "comb through neighborhoods for culinary treasure", "despise hype", and "appreciate ambiance and service" but "can't be fooled by flash". In truth, I've gotten more good leads from This Hole-in-the-Wall Life by the OC Weekly's Gustavo Arellano than I ever have from Chowhound. So much for bucking hype and blazing new trails.
Long-time readers of this blog will remember that I first tangled with the Chowhound Team in October over this post about Frenzy Sushi.
(Click to read the whole text.)
Shortly afterwards, I received an email from the moderators (practically unheard of) that explained they had removed my post because they felt it was "insiderish". Fair enough. I know how discussion boards work. While I didn't agree with the mods, I knew there wasn't much I could do about it.
(For the sake of full disclosure, I've been a once-a-month customer at Frenzy Sushi for over a year. I'm not personal friends with the chef, I am not a publicist, and I do not receive any compensation for my work. However, as a regular customer and a fairly big spender, I do occasionally get comped items when I'm dining. In addition, the chef and I are on friendly terms due to my deep appreciation for his food. My goal in recommending the restaurant to others is simple. It's good. Really really good. In an area with more sushi bars than dry cleaners, a really good sushi restaurant is hard to find.)
(Click to read the whole text.)
For two months, I was a good little muzzled panda, just like the moderators had asked. I occasionally mentioned Frenzy in response to posts about sushi, or when it seemed apropos, but I didn't attempt to post other reviews for it. Then, yesterday, I responded to a survey asking for everyone's top five Ultimate OC Restaurants in 2006. I replied honestly, and Frenzy Sushi was at the top of my list. Within a few hours, my post had been deleted. I couldn't understand it. I didn't think I'd done anything wrong, or against what the moderators had demanded. Compared to my other posts, it was quite innocuous; just a name and a city in a list of names and cities. The deletion seemed utterly whimsical and capricious.
At this point, I knew I had a choice. I could continue to kowtow to the censorship of a high-handed group of moderators who wouldn't explain themselves to the very users who drove their business and kept them employed, or I could stand up for what I believed in, give my honest opinion, and take my punishment like a man. As cheesy as it sounds, some words from the Hagakure, one of the seminal texts in the school of Iaido that I practice, helped me make my decision.
A samurai who is not prepared to die at any moment will inevitably die an unbecoming death. But a samurai who lives his life in constant preparation for death - how can he conduct himself in a despicable manner? One should reflect well on this point and behave accordingly.
- Hagakure, the teachings of Jocho Yamamoto.
I reposted my list without any additional explanation. It was my pure, unvarnished, and uncensored opinion. My post was deleted again, so I reposted again. Another deletion. For the next two days, the Chowhound team and I repeated this dance over and over again. Since I work in IT, I'm in front of a computer 10-12 hours a day. It was easy for me to check the discussion thread regularly and to repost my list if necessary. The Chowhound Team couldn't keep up with me. My opinion was read. My voice was heard.
(Click to read the whole text.)
This evening, I received the terse email above from the Chowhound Team threatening me with expulsion if I didn't stop posting about Frenzy. I found myself at a crossroads. If I continued on my path, I'd be expelled from Chowhound forever. I'd lose the ability to interact with a number of fine people that I'd met on the board and a portion of my readership. In all honesty, the traffic to this blog would probably suffer. On the other hand, what did it say about me or my principles if I caved to an uncompromising dictatorship and censored myself on the board? What weight would my posts have if they didn't reflect my true opinions?
(Click to read the whole text. Depending on your browser, you may have to click on the image again to view it at actual size.)
I sent this email back to the Chowhound Team explaining in a very reasonable and structured manner why I could not comply with their demand. Then, I reposted my list for the last time.
A few minutes later I refreshed the page and was asked to log in. When I tried to do so, I received the message, "Login unsuccessful. Please check your Username and Password". The Chowhound Team had deleted my account. No explanations, no reply to my email, no attempt at further communication. I had failed to follow their orders and been excommunicated. It wasn't unexpected. I had lost a battle that I knew I wouldn't be able to win against a foe who, in that situation, held every advantage over me. Yet, I'd made my stand and stuck to my principles. I was done with Chowhound, and they were done with me.
It felt great.

this is a very comprehensive description of everything that is wrong with Chowhound. You know I have been through the same kind of thing. GOod riddance to them, I say.
DOn't worry about your readership, I am sure it will grow despite Chowhound. I get 40 as many readers today than when I put a link to my blog on CH.
(Anita from Married with Dinner was unable to post due to issues with Blogger Beta, so I've included her very kind words here for her. Thanks Anita!)

You GO. Sorry it happened, but take comfort that you're not alone.
Your picks are on my list for the next visit south... I grew up in Orange, but have completely lost touch with the food scene there.
(I tried to post this as a comment on your blog, but Blogger Beta hates me, even when I log in as "other")

i subscribe to the rss feed for the LA board from chowhound. sometimes when i click on the link to read people's comments to the post (which i'm able to read), the topic has already been removed. i feel it is a minor victory that i got to read it even though it was promptly removed by moderators.
Hey, CP...you know you can just have a different name, get a hotmail email address (free) and sign in again....
My name *really* isn't CathyDoe you know....
and it would be interesting, if under that name, mentioning Frenzy would be automatically tossed...
You didn't do anything wrong at all, CP.
Since you were 14? Wow - well now that you're a great big grown up 15 year old girl, sniping and bitching, maybe you can take a big girl look at just how great it felt? If it feels so great - why are you expending this much energy to post and post and post and then complain about it? Do you seriously, I mean, come on, SERIOUSLY feel good about that? Or do you maybe feel a little sad and pathetic inside? I'm sure your right though, being righteous on a freakin' food board makes you definitely the better person.
Please...
Sam,
Thank you very much for the words of encouragement. Truth be told, I don't feel any angst in moving on from Chowhound. I'm just going to miss a number of the people on the board. Well, except Kris down there on the comment list. But I'll get to him shortly. =)
Anita,
I've already responded to your email, so thanks again. I truly appreciate the support.
TheMirthMobile,
Nice one!
Anon,
That's an interesting suggestion. But I don't wish any ill towards the "Chowhound Team". I've just chosen to stop following their rules. Rather than try to annoy them, I think I'll just flip them the bird and move on. =)
Christian,
Thanks buddy. =D
********
Kris,
Oh, I'm really savoring this. My first flood blog flamer. This is truly awesome. I mean that. I feel like I've won the lottery.
I could debate the merits of my post with you, try to make you see my point of view, blah blah blah, but I think I'll just sink down to your level and wallow in the muck. It's been a while. I've missed it.
-=Flame On!=-
Been rejected my a lot of 14 and 15 year old girls? Unable to get a date? Because you seem to this deep and abiding resentment towards them. Have you gotten laid, ever? Of course you haven't. Because you sound like a whiny brat with too much time on his hands and an overabundance of hormonal aggression. I'll bet you don't have many friends, either.
I'm very happy with my life. Maybe you should take a look deep inside and figure out why you're so unhappy with your's.
Kris, if you're still reading, if you have the balls to work up a response, let me finish by saying one last thing.
Bring it, loser. Bring it on.
-=Flame Off=-
Mmmm... Now that felt good. Christmas just came early for me.
- Chubbypanda
Hahahaha! Something just occured to me. Maybe Kris is a "Chowhound Team" moderator. That would explain a lot, including both the immaturity and why he's so angry. Now that's funny.
Who's "shilling" now, dog-boy. Woof woof.
- Chubbypanda
PS. I'm really enjoying this way too much.
Good on you for not backing down with regards to Chowhound, and good on you for biting back at Kris (Sure, we can ignore flamers and/or trolls, but it's so much more satisfying to respond - I think "wallowing in the muck" is not necessarily a bad thing, BTW).
Definitely DEFINITELY seems to be something in the water.
"Maybe Kris is a 'Chowhound Team' moderator."
That's what I thought as I was reading his post.
Great response CP! You know what I find amusing? That snarky commenters are always are anonymous! Kris is definitely either a Chowhound moderator or a competitor of Frenzy Sushi.
Man, I hate Blogger Beta. I've been trying to respond to this post and the others you published since I commented last, and I've been denied.
I kept checking the back and forth on that Ultimate OC thread on Chowhound, and was rooting for you. I even found it a bit comical. Until this happened.
It's sad and disappointing that they resorted to kicking you out of the board.
You have every right to list Frenzy as one of your favorite restaurants, because, for the record (and this is directed at anyone who's reading this):
I ate with Chubbypanda at Frenzy Sushi recently and I can vouch that he is not an insider.
He just loves Frenzy to death, as I love Cafe Hiro.
He was even critical afterwards about the service, which he thought was lacking, and gawked at the huge check like the rest of us that night.
Sushi joints are a special kind of restaurant. Read any post on sushi etiquette and FAQs on the web (even on Chowhound) and you'll find that being at the bar, interacting with the sushi master himself, is an essential part of the experience. There's a bit of bonding going on. Trust and respect is built on both sides. Out of this, a familiarity is bred, but unfortunately such a rapport can often be misconstrued as shilling when it is written about, especially when the reviewer is someone as passionate as CP.
CP,
I never read Chowhound, or restaurant reviews much for that matter, so I'm not really getting the whole thing. But your blog is exactly your opinion, uncensored. Does it really matter?
Or is this one of those, it was the principle of the thing that spiraled?
For what it's worth, I've never read your stuff on Chowhound and I like your food reviews on this blog just fine. :)
what porcupine crawled up that moderator's butt and died there?-- I haven't been a big chowhound fan recently either, given how they would remove posts & topics w/o warnings, while giving overly-vague, if not outright dodgy, responses to their site's own problems.
TFP,
Hey girl. My troll has nothing on your's. Good grief! Those two are like throwbacks to the 50s. Keep that chin up and that upper lip stiff.
Christian,
Seems sorta on target, doesn't it.
PE,
Sadly, Frenzy isn't quite popular enough to worry its competitors, but it's getting there. So that only leaves a highly immature Chowhound mod or the real thirty year-old virgin sitting in his mom's basement and trolling food blogs when he's not fantasizing about Rachel Ray. =D
Elmo,
Thanks for the words of support and the comment on my character. They really really mean a lot for me. So, where we eating next? (^_^)
WC,
Don't worry about it. It's like being in an abusive relationship. You don't realize the whole exercise is pointless until you decide that you want out. Hasta la vista Chowhound!
HC,
A graphic and entirely accurate decription. I've come to expect no less from you. =)
So, when's the next Opus run?
- Chubbypanda
CP, Continue Rockin' on!! it is precisely your integrity and outspokenness that we admire. In this day and age, when the
wisdom of the crowd is most important, your wisdom reigns over CH.
Didn't time mag just vote "the people" and "the communities"--THE "person of the year". . .
"It's a story about community and collaboration on a scale never
seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge. . .
It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one
another for nothing and how that will not only change the world,
but also change the way the world changes."
In other words, one for all, all for one...
henry
CP, I'd like to mention a project that I've been working on in school and would be grateful for your support on. Please check it out: www.biggestmenu.com :) If you're interested, i'd love to invite you...
Henry,
Thanks! I took a look. Seems interesting. I'd like to read a little more information about the site than what's available, though. For example, do you have a TOS ready?
- Chubbypanda
hey chubbypanda- little late to the game, but yeah.. good riddance to them.. i have never really been on the chowhound site more than once or twice (or heard of it actually until i clicked the link from a few food blogs) and it totally sounds like they are losing their best resource.
i totally thought the same thing a few other commenters mentioned- curious if a new account mentioning frenzy sushi would get deleted. whatevers. totally not worth your energy.
btw, congrats on your first flamer! hahahh
Hi CP,
Thanks for checkin it out. I don't have a TOS yet. Good suggestion. It's a work in progress...
Thanks for the advice.
henry
Joan,
Thanks! I can't say I love flamers, but once they wander onto my radar, they become my "special friends".
Henry,
No worries, buddy.
- Chubbypanda
I'm a bit late to the party, but good for you and how LAME and WEIRD on chowhound's part. Good thing they have so much time on their hands to worry about such small problems.
Praise be to you. You are a brave and courageous sole. I mean, to spend that amount of time, standing up to food blogs moderators with continued repeated post...you should get the Congressional Medal of Honor.
And your use of the term Nazis is spot on. Those evil foodboard moderators are no better than the SS guards at Dachau and you have been just as inhumanely treated as a concentration camp victim!
You are a true freedom fighter!!
Sku,
As with your comment, there was an element of sarcastic tongue-in-cheek in my post. If you're of Jewish descent or a WWII veteran, I'm sincerely sorry if my use of the term "Nazi" in this manner offended you or trivialized a very tragic period in world history. Please accept my apologies.
As a note to future commentors, while I do not ask that you agree with my opinion of the Chowhound moderators, I do ask that you present your arguments/criticism in a constructive manner. If you are unable to do so, please show yourselves the metaphorical door.

hello !
i had exactly the same sad adventure at chowhound and i am in no way surprised now when i see what's written there ,
fusain
Chowhound's dictatorial childishness comes as no surprise to me at all.
I had exactly the same experience on the Toronto board with one of my favourite dining spots. Not only were my comments being deleted, but a number of threads pertaining to the restaurant were completely removed. The funny thing is that the restaurant in question was not new, but a well established eatery that's a bit off the beaten path. I got the impression many of the regulars were happy to see it being mentioned and jumped on the bandwagon. I suppose the Chow Nazis consider this shilling.
Needless to say, I've wiped my hands of them and have no plans to waste anymore of energy on their nonsense!
Chowhound sucks now. I never post there anymore, and I only very rarely visit the site. I much prefer mouthfulfood and egullet, or blogs like yours. ;-)
i put this on digg. u guys should digg it.. digg
One more for the Chowhound Nazi list:
http://durhamfood.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/jujube-chowhound/
Add me to the list. Well, twice. Once I actually said 'pretty please forgive me' and was 'let' back in.
Now, however, after being banned for giving my negative opinion on a restaurant that charged $500. (!) for dinner for two on New Year's Eve, I was banned by the Lords of Chowhound. And won't be kissing their ring in order to get back in.
What an amazingly dictatorial, biased site whose owners don't even have the courtesy of answering emails.
Ah well. And so it goes.
I apologize to reader "Curmudgeon" for not allowing his full comment to be displayed. I wrestled long and hard over the question of whether or not I should publish it, since the last few lines contain personal attacks against the Chowhound Community Manager that I was frankly uncomfortable with, particularly the links to her personal website and her picture. However, most of his comment is reasonably articulated and contains genuine grievances, so I have reproduced those portions below.
From reader "Curmudgeon":
"Indeed, Chowhound does suck. And even more important it is an unreliable source for reviews. Where I live one of the most obsessive posters is someone who has a tin palate, and wouldn't be able to differentiate good from bad. I have been censored more time than I can remember. Most recently is was for expressing disappointment that Trader Joe's has discontinued Stoned Wheat Thins, and that their lines are too long. I was also censored about concern over using ingredients coming from China. The Community Manager for Chowhound is Jacquilynne Schleisier...[rest of text removed]".
I know I'm late in the game with this comment. Chubbypanda, I'm sorry to hear about your terrible experience with Chowhound. I think I would have been as equally pissed off.
I do have to say that I've been deleted a few times. Most of the time, I understand the reasoning and just let it go as it's not worth getting into a tiff about. Once I really disagreed with them deleting my post and wrote a letter to them. My post was reinstated a couple of hours later. So I think that the moderators are willing to listen to reason, but it really depends on the moderator. Sounds like you got stuck with a pretty bad one.
Oh well, it's Chowhound's loss.
I haven't had as many issues with Chowhound as a lot of other people are describing. You will occasionally get those really annoying holier-than-thou posters and posters who decide to take out their aggressions on the boards as opposed to taking some Prozac. I just ignore those and concentrate on the more pleasant ones.
wow - here I try to figure out what happened to the old Chowhound that I used to love (and tracking down who has stolen my old username for the new Chow) and I end up at the blog where my favorite Kabocha recipe is bookmarked! Small world. Yeah, I don't love Yelp but Chowhound has lost it. God I miss usenet! Getting old...
I've found the site less and less interesting and full of recs. for bad, trendy or even chain restaurants in NYC.
It's weird that being a regular at a restaurant would get you banned. NY hounds Leff and his buddy whose name I don't remember used to talk about personal relationships w/chefs, being regulars, ordering off menu...all the time.
In NY, the Di Fara cult (well deserved) is full of insiderish info on what Dom has cooking.
Don't even think about posting any thing negative about Blue Star ranges on CH. Blue Star is a CH "sponsor" (Can you say click point advertising?) I was barred from posting any thing about BS ranges and received a similar email from them threatening to close my account.
What a Joke.
Please be very careful and think twice before you post photos on Chowhound. If they like your images they claim they have ownership over your copy right and will not allow the removal of your images. Think twice before you submit ANY content to Chowhound.
There are claims that they have even published a book and altered the posts of members as content.
Chowhound stands for every thing a true hound should hate. Big corporate America running over the little guy with heavy handed moderation and what in my opinion amounts to little more than theft.
I have emails from CH refusing to remove my images after I requested them to be taken down several times.
It is amazing how many people have been banned from Chowhound. I personally know two and many more who have been reprimanded and/or restricted.
I was banned from Chowhound. I was allowed back on, but restricted to the regional food boards.
Has anyone ever been banned from Chowhound for posting negative comments about moderation from outside Chowhound, such as a blog, like this?
I want to start a blog so I can say what I cannot say on Chowhound and wonder if the would kick me out again if I did so and if I was critical of them?
