About Me
- Chubbypanda
- I am an American of Taiwanese extraction. I have spent the majority of my life as a Californian, and am currently an IT professional in Southern California. I started food blogging in 2006.
Cooking is a major passion of mine. My cookbook collection is large and still growing. I love experimenting with new ingredients and cuisines, and trying new restaurants in order to experience other cultures.
In addition to cooking, I study food history, which tracks the transmission of agriculture, cooking techniques, and eating habits in order to analyze the movement of people and ideas across regions. I’m also interested in Asian trans-nationalism in the 1900s and in East Asian history.

Close to one month ago, New Shanghai, my favorite spot for late night eats in Irvine, closed its doors. Having been tipped off earlier by the lovely Rasa Malaysia, Cat and I assembled a group of her graduate student friends, New Shanghai devotees one and all, for a final, blowout meal.
(Last call.)
I don't know what it was that made the food so wonderful that night. Maybe it was the nostalgic melancholy we felt as we carefully savored every dish, enshrining them in our memories. It could also have been that the cooks at New Shanghai, knowing that this was their final opportunity to show us their skills, decided to pull out the stops in one last blaze of glory. Whatever the cause, everything we feasted on was authentic and delicious down to the core.

This entry has totally put me in the mood for some Shanghainese food! Especially some dou sa bing!
Any reason for the closure? I'm not there to try the food, but seems that a few recent fav eateries has closed down recently.
