Every so often you get tired of food blogging. Instead of searching out new places to eat, you want comfort food from your favorite (and often embarrassing) haunts. Lugging your camera out with you to take pictures becomes a chore. Even the good-natured ribbing from your friends as you pose their food for the perfect shot can become trying.
(Chocolate Ice Cream Float)
Summer seems to be the worst. It's hot and humid. You're lethargic. If you're anything like me, you lose your appetite. There are days when all I want are cold drinks. I lose a lot of weight in the summer.
(Teddy bears and candy? Heaven!)
However, a panda needs to keep his strength up. What better way in the broiling California heat than with sugar? It's stimulating to the mind and cooling to the body!
Ok, there lot's of better ways. But, I bet none of them are as fun.
(Glucose, fructose, and sucrose- Oh my!)
Enter Marcy's Ice Cream & Candy Store, a neighborhood shop with over 50 years of history and a great place to stop for a cooling treat when you're in the South Bay. It reminds me of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, 1/800th the size. Just stepping inside should send triglycerides zipping through your veins like hamsters through a fire hose. It's cute! It's cuddly! It's full of candy! We're talking serious ferret shock here.
(Banana Split)
Although stocking up on sugary fortification is a perk, the real treats are behind the counter, where Marcy's Ice Cream & Candy Store stocks its artisan, hand-made ice cream. Smooth and creamy with a great mouth-feel, the frozen confections remind me why old-fashioned ice cream parlors were once so popular. You literally can't get an experience like this at a Coldstone or Baskin Robbins. The owners and their staff personally create each and every product. In addition to the usual suspects, Marcy's carries a number of original gourmet flavors that are rotated regularly and always a pleasure to sample.
(Malt)
Marcy's Ice Cream & Candy Store - If you have a little time on a hot day, stop on by. You'll have fun browsing candies you haven't seen since you were a kid. Try their sundaes. You won't regret it.

hey, been reading your site for a while, loved your post on gen kai btw, and i want to try it sometime soon...have a friend that lives in irivine, so we'll probably check it out....that was a really good price imo that you guys got for all that food...
anyhow, i have a question. what does roi mean when you rate places? always wondered.
Mothermayi,
Thanks for reading my site! ROI is a finance term that stands for Return On Investment. Basically, I use it to represent whether I thought the experience I received was worth the price I payed.

yum, I love floats and candy and ice cream! I wish I lost my appetite when it gets hot... I just don't like to cook in the heat, but there are always tons of nice air-conditioned places to get food! I love the descriptive hamsters through the firehose.
Been going to Marcy's since I was a wee one and was dismayed to seethe "For Sale" sign in the window on and off the last few months. Have not partaken of the creamy stuff in a while. Did they say anything about selling?
I"ve been to Marcy's. I was on a quest. A friend of mine was looking for the penny candies of our youth, including red hot dollars, mexican hats, and those long strips of paper with little squibs of colored sugar blurped on. They didnt have the mexican hats, but they did have everything else, including a few things I had completely forgotten about. The employees are very nice.
you made it all the way to Torrance, eh? :) looks so good. next time you're in Torrance, you should check out Torrance Bakery.. they have some really delicious cookies.
ahhhh it's a bagazillion degrees out in NYC today - what I wouldn't give for that chocolate ice cream float! ^_^
Now I'm craving a banana split ... would be perfect for this summer weather!
Foodhoe,
Does it really get hot up there in San Fran? We used to escape up to the city when the weather got too warm down in the valley. Love those ocean breezes.
heidih,
I wouldn't worry too much. Marcy's has had six different owners since it first opened. Hopefully the current owner will find someone committed to carrying on the fine traditions of this neighborhood shop.
Anon,
It's a lot like stepping into a fuzzy time warp.
Joanh,
Gotta pass it every day during my commute. The Irvine to LA drive is murder.
Kathy,
I can believe it. You should try building a solar oven for cookie baking. =)
Taste Tester,
Ahhh... Sweet sugar rush...

I live in Torrance but it was my first trip to Marcy's. And my last. The ice cream was okay, and cheap, but the oreos were mushy in my cafe oreo and I didn't want to touch anything else. The candy display looked nice but upon closer inspection you could tell the candy was OLD. Seriously, the candy was discolored and there was no way I was going to touch any of that. I'm all for mom and pop shops, but seriously, you have to bring some quality to the table.
That said, don't bother with Torrance Bakery. It looks nice, but its heavy and expensive. You should go to Sweeties Bakery in Gardena. Those cakes I love! :)
Thanks for the tip on low-cal treats(har-har) in Torrance. Next time I'm in the area, I may have to stop by(camera lugging and all).
Chocolate float! awesome. What kind of soda is in the float?
Anon,
Thanks for the tip about Sweeties Bakery. I appreciate it.
L'aura,
Cooling. Cooling treats. =D
Steamy Kitchen,
I think it was Coke.
